2004

Saturday the 27th November was buy nothing day, and to celebrate, a bunch of people from the Manchester based do summat collective got together to encourage people to think about consumerism. They made and distributes a zine and also gave tips on how to get stuff for free in manchester. A free shop was set up - with food and plenty of cakes, as well as free clothes and toys

The folks involved said they were surprised at how well it went. Families, old couples, kids and youths all came and had some cake, or took some clothes and a flyer or zine.... and within just one and a half hours everything, including the actual clothes rail, had gone.

There was some more fun and frolicks as people played anti-consumer games in a number of shops - from hide and seek in selfridges - to stuck in the mud in diesel.... Reclaiming consumer space and having some fun.

2003

the day was jam packed with a variety of stuff..

some hardcore early risers met at 9am to subvertise the city in an 'advertise nuffin' campaign that involved puttin up some simple signs along the A6 in Salford that re-enforced the advertisers' messages. The boards instead read; consume, obey, marry and reproduce, no free thought, honour apathy, go to sleep etc....

also subvertising a large ad in front of manchester piccadilly train station... they were dressed in white overalls giving out blank flyers as they went...twas very open and very effective..

then in the afternoon there was a 'Stop Shop' shop jammin action, where aliens and zombies wandered around the arndale centre and the citys' shops to gaze in disbelief at the consumerist paradise and to generally disrupt normal business. Shops visted (all too briefly in some cases) included Selfridges, Tesco and the Arndale.

then throughout the afternoon there were a variety of workshops at the mumbo arts centre... including: Juggling and circus skills.. graffiti and art... fair trade coffee loungin... face paintin.. reiki... and more...
